Voices of the Western Wind: The Marian Consort

While William Byrd lived long before minimalism as a musical style emerged, a number of his compositions, along with those of fellow English Renaissance composer John Taverner, exhibit characteristics – including the use of repetitive melodic and harmonic patterns, notably through canon and cantus firmus – that foreshadow aspects of minimalism. Daniel Kidane’s new work takes inspiration from these elements, blending old and new and exploring the interplay of voices fundamental to Renaissance polyphony.

Together with Renaissance-inspired minimalist works by Tom Coult, Nico Muhly and Edmund Finnis, our programme brings today's listeners on a harmonic journey across time, looking to the future but rooted in the conventions of the past.
